We advocate for New York City government data to be readily available for all to see and use. We believe that no one group has all the answers and that all New Yorkers have the right and the ability to understand data and their government.
We work toward all government data, properly anonymized, being universally accessible and in a useful form. Working with NYC government we plan to request and host all government data that we learn exists. In an increasingly open world, we believe that pushing government to be more transparent is the only way to bring it into the digital present.
Collaborating with graphic designers, data scientists, artists, coders and others, we improve the quality and timeliness of data presentation so that all New Yorkers can evaluate what works, and what doesn't objectively. New Yorkers will be able to use that knowledge to make smarter policy and political choices.
We spend time telling stories. We look for forums, venues, and media to share the successes and failures of government as seen through the evidence. We hope that through our example we can teach the beauty and power of data analysis.
We support community groups in analyzing, understanding, and visualizing their data, as long as they agree to make that data publicly available. We believe that we should use our skills to find every opportunity to help others do their work better.
